Jannik Sinner of San Candido, Italy has won the ATP Tour event in Rotterdam. On Sunday, he won the 2024 ABN AMRO Open by beating Alex de Minaur of Australia 7-5, 6-4.

Sinner was the first seed, and de Minaur was the fifth seed. A major reason for Sinner’s success was the fact that Sinner was able to break de Minaur four times in eight opportunities. Sinner won despite the fact that de Minaur had 10 aces.

Along the way, Sinner beat two Dutch players en route to the title. He defeated Botic van de Zandschulp 6-3, 6-3 in the first round, and Tallon Griekspoor 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinal. Sinner also beat Gael Monfils of France (the two-time grand slam semifinalist) 6-3. 3-6, 6-3 in the second round and 2016 Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic of Canada 7-6, 1-1 in the quarterfinals. After beating Raonic 7-4 in the first set tiebreak and the second set tied at one game apiece, the big Canadian withdrew because of a hip injury. Ironically, it was the hip that gave Raonic trouble at the 2024 Australian Open when he lost in the first round to de Minaur, 6-7, 6-3, 2-0.

With the win, Sinner moves up one place in the ATP Tour world rankings. He moved from fourth to third, and passed Russia’s Daniil Medvedev.

This was Sinner’s 12th ATP Tour victory. He reached the final of Rotterdam a year ago, but lost in straight sets to Medvedev, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. You could say that Sinner got some mild redemption against Medvedev in January when he won his first career grand slam singles title at the 2024 Australian Open in Melbourne in five sets, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.
