Jannik Sinner of San Candido, Italy won the 2023 China Open on Wednesday. In a rare ATP final that happened in the middle of the week, Sinner, the sixth seed, defeated Daniil Medvedev of Russia, the second seed, 7-6, 7-6. In the first set tiebreak Sinner won 7-2, and in the second set tiebreak, Sinner also won 7-2.

Double faults were a key statistic in the match. Medvedev had four double faults, while Sinner had none. One of Medvedev’s double faults came in the first set tiebreak.

In addition to beating Medvedev in the final, Sinner beat Carlos Alcaraz of Spain 7-6, 6-1 in the semifinal. In the first set tiebreak, Sinner was victorious 7-4.

This was the first time Sinner has ever beaten Medvedev. In their head-to-head meetings, Medvedev had won their first six matches, including the finals of Rotterdam and Miami earlier this year. It was the fourth time in seven matches that Sinner has beaten Alcaraz. Sinner also beat the world number two 6-1, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 in the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2022, the final of the 2022 Croatian Open by a score of 6-7, 6-1, 6-1, and the semifinals of Miami in 2023, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2.

Sinner has now won nine tournaments on the ATP Tour, and three titles in 2023. He also won the 2023 Open Sud de France in Montpellier in February, where he beat American Maxime Cressy 7-6, 6-3 in the final, and the 2023 National Bank Open in Toronto in August, where he beat Australia’s Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-1 in the final.

Of Sinner’s nine ATP titles, the 2023 China Open was Sinner’s second ATP title at the 500 level. He previously won the 2021 Washington Open, where he beat American MacKenzie MacDonald 7-5, 4-6, 7-5.
