The third major of the 2025 golf season is now complete and it was a very challenging United States Open to say the least. The champion was J.J. Spaun of Los Angeles, California who barely made it into red numbers as his 72 hole score was -1.
Spaun was the leader of the 2025 United States Open from Oakmont, Pennsylvania after round one. On Thursday, he posted a score of -4 and received high praise for not having a bogey in his round. That accomplishment at the most difficult major of the year deserves recognition itself.
The next three rounds were not exactly smooth sailing. In the second round, Spaun had a score of two-over-par 72, in the the third round, Spaun had a score of one-under-par 69 to return to -3. Then in the fourth round, Spaun had a fourth round score of two-over-par 72.
What was most impressive from Spaun’s Sunday performance was his mental ability to bounce back. The first six holes were a complete disaster as he had five bogeys. However, on the back nine, Spaun was exceptional as he had four birdies in a span of six holes. Spaun birdied the 12th, 14th, 17th, and 18th holes. Spaun’s birdie on the 12th hole was 40 feet, and his birdie on the 18th hole was 64 feet.
This was Spaun’s first major championship, and second PGA Tour win. He previously won the 2022 Valero Texas Open.
There were two more golfers in contention. Robert MacIntyre of Oban, Scotland was two strokes back at +1, and Norway’s Viktor Hovland was three strokes back at +2.
