Italy wins third Davis Cup in a row
3 months ago - Sportingbase
Italy has won their third Davis Cup title in a row. After beating Australia in Malaga, Spain in 2023, and the Netherlands in Malaga in 2024, this time Italy had home court advantage, with Bologna as the host, and the Italians came through with a 2-0 win over Spain. The Italians showed their exceptional depth in the tennis world this past week and got help when it was announced that the Spaniards were without world number two Carlos Alcaraz, due to a hamstring injury.
The Italians came through despite the fact world number one Jannik Sinner was out with a hamstring injury. Sinner, who won the ATP Finals in Turin earlier this month, cited fatigue as the reason fort his withdrawal.

What we saw from Italy over this past week was their depth. The Italians were led by world number 22 Flavio Cobolli of Florence and world number 56 Matteo Berrettini of Rome. Even though Berrettini is currently ranked outside the top 50, when he is on his game, he is a formidable player. The 2021 Wimbledon finalist won all three of his singles matches and did not drop a single set. Berrettini beat Jurij Rodionov of Austria 6-3, 7-6 in the quarterfinals, Raphael Collignon of Belgium 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals, and Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain, the 2017 and 2020 United States Open semifinalist, 6-3, 6-4 in the final.
Cobolli also did not lose a match either. He beat Filip Mosolic of Austria 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals, Zizou Bergs of Belgium 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 in the semifinals, and Jaume Munar of Spain 1-6, 7-6, 7-5 in the finals. The third set tiebreak between Cobolli and Bergs was epic, as Cobolli won 17-15.
Italy has now won four Davis Cup titles. They first won in 1976.
