Italy and Serbia reach semifinals of 2023 Davis Cup

There are two more nations joining Australia and Finland in the semifinals of the 2023 Davis Cup in Malaga, Spain. On Thursday, Italy beat the Netherlands two matches to one in the third quarterfinal matchup, and then Serbia beat Great Britain two matches to none in the fourth quarterfinal matchup.
The Italians were led by 2023 Wimbledon semifinalist, Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego. After Matteo Arnaldi of Italy lost to Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6, Sinner defeated Tallon Griekspoor 7-6, 6-1, and then teamed up with Sonego to beat Grieksopoor and Wesley Koolhoff in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
The Serbs meanwhile were led by world number one Novak Djokovic and Miromir Kecmanovic. In the first match, Kecmanovic beat Jack Draper of Great Britain 7-6, 7-6. Kecmanovic won the first set tiebreak 7-2 and the second set tie break 8-6. Djokovic, the 24-time grand slam singles champion, then beat Cameron Norrie 6-3, 6-4.
Australia will play Finland on Friday in the first Davis Cup semifinal. Serbia will face Italy in the second Davis Cup semifinal on Saturday. The much anticipated Davis Cup Saturday matchup will see Djokovic versus Sinner. Head-to-head, Djokovic has won four of five matches head-to-head. Djokovic won 6-4, 6-2 in the second round of Monte Carlo in 2021, 5-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 2022, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 in the semifinals of Wimbledon in 2023, and 6-3, 6-3, in the 2023 ATP Tour Finals, this past Sunday in Turin, Italy. Sinner meanwhile beat Djokovic 7-5, 6-7, 7-6 during the Green Group of the 2023 ATP Finals. While Djokovic is first in the world at the moment, Sinner has a world ranking of number four.
