Is it the end for Mikel Arteta at Arsenal?

Arsenal has suffered their eighth defeat of the Premier League season against Everton at Goodison Park.

The Toffees marked Carlo Ancelotti’s first anniversary as Everton manager with a win, sending the Merseyside club into second place behind rivals Liverpool.

“The boys are..still fighting” said Arteta.

While Everton capped off a fantastic week beating Chelsea, Leicester, and now Arsenal, the North London club was only able to manage a total of one point from a possible nine. They now have one win in 10 games.

The 2-1 defeat leaves Arsenal with serious questions needing to be answered. The biggest question being, do they stick with Mikel Arteta? The Spaniard led Arsenal to the FA cup last season but there must be serious concerns over Arsenal’s position in the Premier League and their lack of results.

This position is unfamiliar territory for Arsenal. They now sit four points out of the relegation zone after 14 games, their worst start for 36 years. It does not get any easier, as they face Chelsea after the Christmas break.

For the most part, Arsenal looked exactly like a team struggling for survival near the bottom of the table. They were clearly missing their star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as Everton dominated the first half.

Arsenal did manage to lift their performance after the break, but it was not enough to get anything out of the game.

Speaking to talkSport after the game, Arteta was visibly frustrated, saying Arsenal was not as bad as their performances show.

“We’ve been better than the opponent every…week, but we are not winning football matches”, Arteta said.

On the other side of Merseyside, Liverpool continued their run at the top with a dominant 7-0 victory against Crystal Palace in London.

It was Liverpool’s biggest away victory in the Premier League era and Crystal Palace’s worst-ever home defeat.
