The 2022 Indian Premier League auction is now in the books and a number of Australians have managed to net major paydays, with perhaps none more stunning than Hobart Hurricanes’ all-rounder Tim David finishing atop all of his fellow countrymen at close to $1.53 million AUD.

The 25-year-old will join the Mumbai Indians as they prepare for their first match in April, along with fellow Australians Daniel Sams and Riley Meredith. Born in Singapore, David has not represented Australia internationally but is surely turning some heads across the country as he continues to capitalise on an impressive BBL campaign.

Star quick Josh Hazlewood was the second-highest selling Australian, at around $1.44 million AUD and will join the retained Glenn Maxwell at Royal Challengers Bangalore, home to other stars such as Virat Kohli, Wanindu Hasaranga, and Mohammad Siraj.

Pat Cummins, Mitchell Marsh, and David Warner were the three other Australians to clear the million-dollar mark at the auction, whilst the likes of Steve Smith, Aaron Finch, and Adam Zampa were not sold.

Sean Abbott, Matthew Wade, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Jason Behrendorff and Nathan Ellis round out the list of Australian players who were sold.

Opening batsman and wicket-keeper Ishan Kishan was the priciest player sold, netting upwards of an incredible $2.82 million AUD, whilst fellow Indians Deepak Chahar and Shreyas Iyer were not far behind. Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja, meanwhile, were the most expensive players retained.

The Delhi Capitals, led by Pant, Warner, and Marsh, go into the season as betting favourites, with the Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians not far off the pace.

  • Tim David ($1.53M AUD, Mumbai Indians)
  • Josh Hazlewood ($1.44M AUD, Royal Challengers Bangalore)
