Indians suspend Zach Plesac for violating coronavirus protocols

The Cleveland Indians decided to suspend starting pitcher Zach Plesac of Crown Point, Indiana according to Tom Gatto of The Sporting News on Monday. The reason for the suspension is because Plesac reportedly went out with friends Saturday night in Chicago, and broke the Indians team rules and the Major League Baseball coronavirus protocols in the process.

Plesac just recorded his first win of the 2020 MLB season on Saturday in a 7-1 Indians win over the Chicago White Sox. He pitched six innings, and gave up five hits, zero earned runs, and one walk to go along with seven strikeouts. Plesac also lowered his season earned run average from 1.80 to 1.29.

It will be interesting to see how long the suspension will last, or if Plesac will miss his next start. Plesac’s next projected start would be Saturday when the Cleveland Indians face the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.

The Indians have a record of 10 wins and seven losses so far this season. They are currently tied for second place in the American League Central with the surprising Tigers, and are only half a game back of the division-leading Minnesota Twins.

Despite the fact that Major League Baseball curiously did not go to a hub-city format like the National Hockey League and National Basketball Association have been able to do with outstanding success, it is good to see that Major League Baseball and its teams are starting to put measures in proving to the public they are taking coronavirus more seriously. Criticism towards Plesac’s careless actions over the weekend is extremely justified.
