Iga Swiatek of Warsaw, Poland has won her fourth French Open women’s singles title of her career on Saturday. She accomplished the feat with a dominant, straight set 6-2, 6-1 win over Jasmine Paolini of Italy.

Swiatek won 57 of 88 points in the match and broke Paolini five times in nine opportunities. Paoloni broke Swiatek with her only break point opportunity in the first set, but was unable to do any significant damage in the 68 minute encounter. Paolini only won 39% of the points on her first serve and 46% of the points on her second serve.

This is Swiatek’s fourth French Open title and fifth grand slam title overall. She previously won the 2020 French Open, the 2022 French Open, the 2022 United States Open and the 2023 French Open.

Swiatek’s four French Open titles are the third most in the Open Era (since 1968). The only two players in the Open Era who have won more French Open titles are Chris Evert of the United States (seven), and Steffi Graf of Germany (six). All-time, France’s Suzanne Lenglen won six French Opens, Australia’s Margaret Court won five French Opens and France’s Adine Masson won five French Opens.

After Swiatek’s performance at Roland Garros on Saturday, she needs to be considered the overwhelming favourite to win a gold medal in women’s tennis at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Poland has never won a medal in tennis in the history of the Olympic Games. The Olympic tournament begins on July 27 and will return to Roland Garros, the same venue as the French Open.
