Iga Swiatek wins 2023 WTA Finals

Iga Swiatek of Warsaw, Poland has won the 2023 WTA Finals. On Monday, Swiatek defeated Jessica Pegula of the United States 6-1, 6-0 from Cancun, Mexico.

It was quite simply a dominant performance in the championship final for Swiatek, who won the match in one hour and two minutes. Pegula won the second game of the match before Swiatek won 11 straight games. Swiatek also had seven break point chances of which she stole five points. Swiatek won 81% of her first serve points, 75% of her second serve points, and 51 of the 72 points in the match.

Swiatek had a perfect record of five wins and zero losses during the tournament. She won the Chetumal Group with a perfect record of three wins and zero losses. Swiatek’s wins came over American Coco Gauff (6-0, 7-5), Turkey’s Ons Jabeur (6-1, 6-2), and the Czech Republic’s Ons Jabeur (7-6, 6-0). Swiatek then beat Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinal in a battle of the top two players in the world.

This was Swiatek’s sixth title in 2023. She previously won the Qatar Open in February (6-3, 6-0 over Pegula), the Stuttgart Grand Prix, the French Open, the Poland Open and the China Open.

Meanwhile, the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup started on Tuesday with Australia facing Slovenia in Seville, Spain. Slovenia won two matches to one thanks to wins by Kaja Juvan and Tamara Zidansek. If the tournament wanted to attract the elite players in the world (who were at the WTA Finals), they should have waited two weeks, and had the tournament after the 2023 Davis Cup Finals.
