Iga Swiatek wins 2023 French Open women’s singles title

Iga Swiatek of Warsaw, Poland won her fourth grand slam singles title of her career on Saturday. In the final of the 2023 French Open, she defeated Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Swiatek had previously won the 2020 French Open, the 2022 French Open, and the 2022 United States Open.

In Saturday’s final, this match did not go as smooth sailing for Swiatek as the previous six matches of the 2023 Roland Garros tournament. Swiatek had not lost a set over the last two weeks until the second set of the final. Then early in the third set, Muchova got an early break of serve before Swiatek took control. Then in the 10th game of the third set, Swiatek won the match on a Muchova double fault.

This was Swiatek’s third win during the 2023 women’s tennis season. She previously beat Jessica Pegula of the United States 6-3, 6-0 rather easily in the final of the Qatar Open, and then world number two Aryana Sabalenka of Belarus 6-3, 6-4 in the final of Stuttgart.

Swiatek’s three French Open titles are the fourth most in the Open Era. She is behind Chris Evert of the United States (seven), Steffi Graf of Germany (six), and Justine Henin of Belgium (four).

It will now be interesting to see how Swiatek prepares for Wimbledon. A year ago after winning the French Open, she lost 6-4, 6-2 to Alize Cornet of France in the third round of the only major of the year on grass. There will be tuneup tournaments over the next three weeks on grass in Rosmalen, Netherlands, Nottingham, England, Berlin, Germany, Birmingham, England, Eastbourne, England, and Homburg, Germany.
