According to the BBC on Thursday, world number one Iga Swiatek of Poland has named Wim Fisette of Belgium as her new coach. Swiatek had parted ways with Tomasz Wiktorowski of Poland. Wiktorowski had been Swiatek’s coach for the last four years from 2021 to 2024.
Swiatek is currently first in the world, but has a very slim lead over Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus at the moment. With wins at the Cincinnati Open, United States Open and Wuhan Open since August, Sabalenka is only 69 points back of Swiatek in the world rankings. Sabalenka has 9716 points and Swiatek has 9785 points.
Fisette has a remarkable resume when it comes to coaching women’s tennis. He is a six-time major champion. He was the coach for Belgium’s Kim Clijsters when she won the 2009 and 2010 United States Open, coached Clijsters when she won the 2011 Australian Open, coached Angelique Kerber of Germany when she won Wimbledon in 2018, Naomi Osaka of Japan when she won the 2020 United States Open, and Osaka again when she won the 2021 Australian Open.
Osaka had Fisette as her coach until the middle of September when she named Serena Williams’s old coach Patrick Mouratogolou as her new coach. Osaka is currently 58th in the world, and reached the fourth round of the China Open in September, the first WTA event where she was getting instruction from Mouratogolou. In Beijing, Osaka beat Lucia Bronzetti of Italy in the first round, 6-3, 6-2, Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan in the second round, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, and Katie Voynets of the United States in the third round, 6-3, 6-2.
