Hubert Hurkacz wins 2023 Shanghai Masters

Hubert Hurkacz of Wroclaw, Poland won the 2023 Shanghai Masters on Sunday. In the final, he defeated Andrey Rublev of Russia, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.  For Hurkacz, it was his seventh ATP title, and second ATP title at the Masters 1000 level. He previously beat Jannik Sinner of Italy in the 2021 Miami Open final. When Hurkacz won the Miami Open, he became the first Polish player ever to win an ATP Masters 1000 series title.

Hurkacz won the match on Sunday because of his serve. He had 21 aces, compared to 13 for Rublev. Hurkacz also won 80% of his first serve points, and was victorious even though he won fewer total points in the match than Rublev. Hurkacz won 94 points, compared to 95 points for Rublev. In the third set tiebreak, Hurkacz won 10-8.

Rublev was one of two seeded players Hurkacz beat during the tournament. Hurkacz also beat American Sebastian Korda of Bradenton, Florida, the 26th seed, 6-3, 6-4, in the semifinals. Hurkacz is currently 11th in the ATP World Rankings. During the Shanghai Masters, he was seeded 16th, while Rublev was seeded fifth.

This was Hurkacz’s second ATP title in 2023. He previously won the 2023 Open 13 event in Marseille, France on February 26. There he beat Benjamin Bonzi of France in the final, 6-3, 7-6. In the second set tiebreak, Hurkacz won 7-4.

Now the world’s best men’s players are off to Tokyo for the Japan Open this week, which is a 500 level event. There are two 250 level events as well this week in Stockholm and Antwerp. The ATP event in Belgium is the European Open. The last ATP Masters 1000 event of the season is in Paris starting October 30.
