Hinako Shibuno has narrow lead after round three of 2020 U.S. Women’s Open

Just like after round two, Hinkako Shibuno of Japan is the leader after the third round of the 2020 U.S. Women’s Open from the Champions Golf Club in Houston, Texas. However, the three-stroke lead Shibuno had after Friday, is now down to a single stroke.

Shibuno began round two at seven-under-par. However, after a three-over-par 74, Shibuno’s lead is now at one, with American Amy Olson in second place at -3. Two other players are currently under par and in contention. Thailand’s Moriya Jutanugarn and South Korea’s Ji Yeong Kim 2 are tied for third place at one-under-par.

Shibuno, Olson, Jutanugarn, and Kim are the only players under par at the moment. Of the four contenders, only Shibuno has won a major in the past. She was victorious at the 2019 Women’s British Open in Milton Keynes.

In Saturday’s round, Shibuno had only birdie in the entire 18 holes. After registering a bogey on the first hole to drop down to -6, she returned to -7 with a birdie on the par-5 fifth hole. However, that was followed by bogeys on the seventh, 14th, and 18th holes.

The third round played much more difficult than round one or round two. The wind picked up during Saturday’s play, which made the conditions extra challenging for the 66 players who made the cut.

Olson meanwhile is looking for her first career win on the LPGA Tour. Remarkably, she has the record for the most career titles at the National Collegiate Athletic Association level with 20. Olson achieved the record while attending North Dakota State University.
