High heat on Seibold should Sea Eagles again miss the finals

The torch could very well be turned on Anthony Seibold on the Northern Beaches should the Sea Eagles fail to play postseason footy again in 2024, with whispers coming out of Manly that the club has already paused extension negotiations.

The Sea Eagles have slipped into the top eight off the back of their two-point bye this round, but are just a single win inside the playoffs barrier alongside the Dragons and Bulldogs (each at 10-8). The Dolphins and Raiders sit just behind with 9-9 records.

Right now, Sea Eagles brass have put a stopper on any extension talks, The Sporting Base has heard, with the backroom happy to see where Seibold guides his Manly outfit before making any serious offers. Seibold is contracted for one more year beyond 2024, but could easily be a free agent again come November 2025.

Whether things get rolling again will come down to Manly’s September footy.

Fox Sports has already reported Seibold is under “intense pressure” and has had his tenuous position flagged. He was told by officials before round 20, when the team then went out and blew away the Gold Coast Titans, 38-8. They then followed that up a week later with a narrow loss to the Sydney Roosters in a 64-point barnstormer.

Seibold has yet to publicly talk about his future at or away from Manly, but there are apparently those within the walls who still believe he can turn things around at Brookvale; finals should be achievable, those same people have claimed.

Earlier in the year, Manly CEO Tony Mestrov admitted there was no worry on either side about dragging negotiations: “I don’t think it’s an issue because Anthony is under contract for another 12 months. We will continue to have discussions with his agent at the appropriate time.”

The next six or so weeks now shape as vital to Seibold’s Sea Eagles tenure. Manly, nearly at full strength, will face the Raiders, Warriors, Tigers, Bulldogs, and then finally the Sharks in Round 27.
