‘He needs a fresh start’: Horsburgh to quit Raiders, looks set for Dragons move

Corey Horsburgh has asked the Canberra Raiders to release him from the final years of his contract in the nation’s capital and a Sydney club looking for hard-hitting forwards looks set to pounce on the opportunity.
The St George Illawarra Dragons look to be in pole position for the wantaway Raider, though the Wests Tigers have also submitted a formal letter of interest with Horsburgh’s manager.

The Sporting Base understands Horsburgh would waive the last three years of his pay with Canberra if the Raiders agree. He’s signed through to 2027 and is set to make nearly $2 million—and was just extended last year—but is mainly just eager to get away.
His manager, Jeff Jurotte, said neither he nor Horsburgh “can believe how things have deteriorated” between the forward and Ricky Stuart over the last twelve months.

The 26-year-old, who just made his State of Origin debut last year and has been regarded as among the most destructive forwards in the game for several years, has played reserve grade for most of this season. “Corey’s whole life revolves around his footy,” Jurotte said. “When he’s not playing footy, things can get difficult. He needs a fresh start.”
Shane Flanagan has made it very clear since he took the helm at the joint venture that he wants to beef up the forward pack. Daniel Safiti looks set to move to Wollongong at the end of the season and he could now be joined by Horsburgh too.

Most of this season has seen Horsburgh felled by a groin injury and suspensions. He’s played first grade just twice; round four against the Sharks and a week later against the Eels—72 minutes all up.
