Grayson Murray wins 2024 Sony Open

In the second event of the 2024 PGA Tour season, Grayson Murray of Raleigh, North Carolina won the Sony Open in Honolulu, Hawaii. On Sunday, Murray posted a four-round score of -17, and then beat Byeong-hun An of Seoul, South Korea and 2011 PGA Championship winner Keegan Bradley of Woodstock, Vermont in a one-hole playoff. On the extra hole, Murray made a 39-foot birdie putt, while An and Bradley only had a score of par.

During the four rounds, Murray had a first round score of one-under-par 69, a second round score of seven-under-par 63, third round score of six-under-par 64, and fourth round score of three-under-par 67. Murray’s most successful hole during the 73 holes of golf came on the ninth hole in the third round on Saturday. That is when he posted an eagle, with a score of three on a par five.

In the tournament, six other golfers were in contention. Carl Yuan of Dalian, China, and Russell Henley of Macon, Georgia, tied for fourth place at -16. J.T. Poston of Hickory, North Carolina was all alone in sixth place at -15, while Canadian Nick Taylor of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Emiliano Grillo of Resistencia, Argentina, and Matthieu Pavon of Toulouse, France tied for seventh place at -14.

This was the second career PGA Tour victory for Murray. He previously won the 2017 Barbasol Championship in Nicholasville, Kentucky.

There was a similarity between the two PGA Tour winners of 2024. Both Murray, and the 2024 Sentry Tournament champion Chris Kirk of Knoxville, Tennessee a week ago, have had to deal with alcoholism in their life.
