Golf: Three golfers who could win the British Open
7 months ago - Sportingbase
The final major of the 2024 golf season will take place at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. Golf fans will have an opportunity to see the world’s best tackle the elements as well as the course. Will golfers shoot low or high? Well, we will have to find out over the next 96 hours.
Scottie Scheffler
Scheffler is the betting favourite at +550. The world number one should never be counted out under any circumstances. Last week he finished in eighth place at the Scottish Open by shooting a four round score of -9. What is remarkable about Scheffler is his outstanding consistency and his ability to be in contention every single week. Scheffler has been in the top eight in the last 10 tournaments he has played in, including three titles. Scheffler won the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, PGA Championship and Memorial.
Rory McIlroy
After a rough Canadian Open, McIlroy is getting his game back on track. The world number two is at +700. He finished in sixth place at the Travelers Championship, and second at the Scottish Open. McIlroy will now be competing in a major championship at home, which should also be a significant benefit. We are talking about a five-time major champion, who won the Masters earlier this year.

Shane Lowry
Lowry should definitely be a contender based on what happened six years ago at Portrush. The native of Clara, Ireland dominated the British Open by shooting a four round score of -15. The closest competitor to Lowry was Tommy Fleetwood of Southport, England, who was in second place at -9.
