Golden Eagle Review: What The Jockeys Said

6 years ago - Sportingbase Golden Eagle Review: What The Jockeys Said Image

Glen Boss showed why he is one of the best big race riders in the country producing a gem of a ride on Kolding to take out the Golden Eagle.

Here’s what the jockeys said.

Glen Boss (Kolding – 1st)

Wow that was some race. In the middle it was ridiculously slow it was almost dangerous. J Mac (James McDonald) almost fell beside me it was so slow. I’d almost given up to be honest because of the speed in the race. I thought ‘I should have been more positive’ or ‘I should have made them work a bit more’, all these things were going through my head. But then you just straight away switch back, you’ve got a job to do. I had nowhere to go – wow he’s brave. He’s a star. His form was the best going into the race. I knew I was on the right horse. When I got the split at the furlong I knew I was home because he hadn’t done any work. He’d been held up most of the race. He’s got a very good turn of speed this horse. It was tight and he was willing – wow!

Luke Currie (Sunlight – 2nd)

She was brave. A great effort from Tony, Calvin and the stable to get her to properly settle like that in a 1500m race and still kick.

Jason Collett (Mizzy – 3rd)

Fantastic run. You couldn’t ask for much more.

Todd Pannell (Behemoth – 4th)

He ran out of his skin. He got a good, clean start today out of the gates and he was a little bit closer than I expected. He travelled well throughout, I was able to get him balanced through the trip. He did quicken nicely and gave me a good sight at the furlong.

James McDonald (Arcadia Queen – 5th)

She ran super, she just undid herself by pulling so hard through the middle stages. It was basically a messy, walking race and she just undid herself but still ran pretty well.

Pat Dobbs (Beat Le Bon – 6th)

He ran great. I was too far back. He made up a lot of ground but the pace wasn’t frantic. He ran well.

Andrew Adkins (Military Zone – 7th)

Huge run from a wide barrier and a wide run. Great effort to do what he did, battling out for 5th, 6th and 7th. I was very happy.

Robbie Dolan (Jonker – 8th)

He actually ran really well. He settled back further than we initially thought. He was in such a good rhythm, I was in behind Kolding and Arcadia Queen and he actually finished the race off quite strong.

Rachel King (Fasika – 9th)

A very creditable run stepping up sharply in grade and she’s only going to improve from here.

Kerrin McEvoy (Classique Legend – 10th)

I was happy with how he travelled early; we had a nice trip. I then had to duck and weave looking for runs and in doing that over the last furlong he was just even paced. I think he is better than what he showed there today and I’m sure we’ll get a better version next preparation.

Tommy Berry (Brutal – 11th)

It was brutal to watch. I wasn’t too worried in the early stages. There was good speed on early and I waited for the speed to come out of the race before I let him work his way around them. I was very happy with him then, he got into a nice rhythm. We got about a 100m breather and then the overseas horse came and put the pressure on, so he got a 100m break in the whole race. No horse is good enough to cop that.

Nash Rawiller (The Inevitable – 12th)

He was a little bit hot today before the race. I was reluctant to dig him out of the gates for that reason and we ended up in a pretty ordinary spot. We never got an opportunity to find a rhythm. The horse ran well but it just wasn’t our day.

Leigh Roche (I Am Superman – 13th)

When we jumped they went along quick for two furlongs then they steadied right up. He latched on but ran too keen and didn’t finish off.

Pierre-Charles Boudot (More No More – 14th)

He jumped well but made a fault and lost ground.

Brandon Lerena (Fun Fact – 15th)

Short of his best trip but he was finishing when the race was all over.

Brenton Avdulla (Gem Song – 16th)

Began fairly and ended up in not a bad spot but he was beaten a long way out.
