The Boomers are back in the winner’s circle after finishing atop hosts Japan 109-89 in Okinawa on Tuesday night behind Josh Giddey’s team-high 26.

Australia jumped out to an eight-point advantage at the end of the first before a dominant second quarter saw their lead extended to 22 heading into the half.

Japan fought back in the third period to cut into the lead, but Australia ultimately held on for a needed win.

The win ensures that the Boomers finish second in their group with a likely clash against Luka Dončić’s Slovenia looming.

Giddey finished with 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting to go along with 11 assists and five rebounds.

Xavier Cooks also put together a dominant display adding 24 points, 16 rebounds, and a pair of blocks.

Nick Kay added 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting whilst Patty Mills had 11 points and nine assists.

Japan’s Joshua Hawkinson finished with a game-high 33 on 13-of-16 shooting whilst Yuta Watanabe put up 24 points and seven rebounds.

The Boomers will likely face Slovenia on Friday night before a Sunday night matchup against one of Georgia or Cape Verde as they look to keep their medal hopes alive.
