Game’s best winger quietly hits market as To’o shopped to rivals

The NRL world is about to descend into a bidding war over Brian To’o if early reports are to be believed, with Channel Nine today suggesting Brian To’o has been secretly spruiked to several NRL rivals.

The shock news came from Danny Weidler on Tuesday, with the Nine reporter claiming “select clubs” were asked if they’d be interested in signing superstar Panthers winger To’o.

The Sporting Base can only imagine there’d be one answer from every club asked: “Yes.” The Penrith outside back is easily the best winger in the NRL competition and epitomises the prototype for a modern number two or five in 2020s rugby league. He could command as much as $700,000 to $800,000 on the market.

Interestingly, the 25-year-old is supposed to be signed through to 2027, at least.

Whether this is a salary cap issue at the Panthers or it’s To’o’s agent testing the waters for a big pay day. Zero Tackle has suggested its the Panthers spuriking their star, but The Sporting Base has yet to hear confirmation on club-side.

The cult hero winger has long suggested he wants to stay a one-club player and see out his NRL days in the black and white at the foot of the mountains, so it’s unlikely to be him pushing for anything.

Any club given the chance to snap up To’o and his contract would be silly not to take it. As mentioned, he’s among the best in the modern game and regularly ranks in the top ten for total metres run every season. A three-time NRL champion, the 25-year-old has already played 12 New South Wales games and nine test for Samoa.

The Panthers are also losing Sunia Turuva to the Wests Tigers at the end of the season and just sacked Taylan May, suggesting the club wouldn’t want to shortchange their winger stock any more.
