G1 Underwood Stakes Review: What The Jockeys Said

Black Heart Bart had racing fans on their feet when he surged to the front to win the Underwood stakes at 100-1. Here’s what the jockeys said.

Brad Rawiller (Black Heart Bart – 1st)

“I said last week when you asked me, that he lit the fire today, but you’ve still got to see it. I’m a bit overwhelmed myself but I thought he could win today. I was actually quite confident but you just can’t expect to win every race.”

Ben Melham (Homesman – 2nd)

“I thought it was a really gallant performance. A lot more horses pressed forward than I anticipated early and they were too quick for me and I didn’t want to be working up the hill from the wide alley, I thought he had a good run and was beaten by a better horse on the day.”

Damien Oliver (Gailo Chop – 3rd)

“No comment.”

Hugh Bowman (Hartnell – 4th)

“He ran a nice race. I was hoping for a bit more pressure but it was a sprint home but he’s still run his usual honest race.”

Jamie Kah (Gatting – 5th)

“He was OK. He’s just a better horse with cover.”

Dwayne Dunn (Harlem – 6th)

“He ran really well. I’m looking forward to him getting back to 2000m. He’s nearly back to his best.”

Peter Hall (Trap For Fools – 7th)

“He’s racing well but it’s hard when you’re a leader. I just need to pinch a couple of lengths on straightening and if he can do that, he might win a cheeky one.”

“He ran all right. He’ll go better further up (in trip) and back to handicap conditions.”

Damian Lane (The Chosen One – 9th)

“I have to say he was a touch disappointing. Just wasn’t there when I needed him. From the 500m he was just left flat-footed.”

Kerrin McEvoy (Humidor -10th)

“From back in the field he ran a really good race. He stretched out nicely to the line. He goes out further in trip and you couldn’t fault his run there today.”
