Four worst scores on the 17th at the Players Championship

One of the most remarkable holes in all of golf is the 17th at TPC Sawgrass in northern Florida. The green is completely surrounded by water, and gives players a significant challenge on an annual basis. On Thursday, there were 35 golf balls that sunk into the H2O during the first round of the 2021 Players Championship. Among them were four balls hit by South Korea’s Byeong-hun An, who represented the International Team at the 2019 Presidents Cup in Melbourne. So where does An rank among the highest scores posted on the 17th hole ever at TPC Sawgrass? Let’s take a look.
4) Phil Blackmar–During the second round of the 1990 Players Championship, Phil Blackmar of San Diego, California posted a score of 10 on the par three. Twice he shot the ball into the water, including one time using his wedge. During the same round, famous golf broadcaster Roger Maltbie of Modesto, California, had a score of nine on the same hole.
2) Beyong-Hun An–South Korean golfers have had success in the past at The Players Championship. K.J. Choi was victorious in 2011, and Si-woo Kim won the title in 2017. But on Thursday, it was a tough day for An, who had a quadruple-bogey 11 on the par-three. The score of 11 overshadowed the brilliant shot-making of Sergio Garcia of Spain, who had two eagles, and shot an opening-round score of -7 to take the first-round lead.

2) Robert Gamez–In the third round of the 1990 Players Championship, Robert Gamez of Las Vegas, Nevada posted a score of 11. A 21-year-old rookie at the time, Gamez was hot coming into the tournament as he had won the 1990 Tucson Open. However, he could not keep the momentum going heading into the Players Championship.
1)Bob Tway–Bob Tway of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma is best known for winning the 1986 PGA Championship. However, in the third round of the 2005 Players Championship, he posted a score of 12. Like An, he had four golf balls that landed into the water.
