Former Rams head coach John Robinson dies at age 89

According to Greg Beacham of the Associated Press on Monday, former Los Angeles Rams head coach John Robinson has passed away at the age of 89. Robinson, a native of Chicago, Illinois, was the head coach of the Rams from 1983 to 1991.

In nine seasons coaching the Rams, Robinson had a record of 75 wins and 68 losses for a winning percentage of .524 in 143 games coached. In six of the nine seasons Robinson coached the Rams, Los Angeles made the playoffs. He guided the Rams to four playoff victories. The Rams defeated the Dallas Cowboys 24-17 in the 1983 NFC Wildcard, beat the Cowboys again 20-0 in the 1986 NFC Divisional Playoff, and the Philadelphia Eagles 21-7 and the New York Giants 19-13 in the 1990 NFL Playoffs.

Robinson also had the opportunity to coach Eric Dickerson. The star running back was remembered mostly for his time with the Rams, even though he was remarkably traded four times. 

In addition to coaching the Rams, Robinson was the running backs coach for the Oakland Raiders in 1975. It was at this time, Robinson worked for the legendary coach and broadcaster John Madden.

In addition to coaching in the National Football League, Robinson coached the University of South Carolina Trojans from 1976 to 1982, and again from 1993 to 1997. While with the Trojans, Robins guided the University of Southern California to a national championship from the 1978 season. The Trojans had a record of 12 wins and one loss. Their only defeat that season came to the Arizona State Sun Devils as they were beaten 20-7. Robinson also coached UNLV for six seasons from 1999 to 2004.
