According to Jason Owens of Yahoo! Sports on Wednesday, former National Football League tight end Tyrone Davis of Halifax, Virginia passed away at the age of 50 on October 2. Davis spent eight seasons in the National Football League with the New York Jets and Green Bay Packers. He was with the Jets in 1995 and 1996, and then with the Packers from 1997 to 2002.

In 75 games, Davis had 73 catches for 795 yards and 13 touchdowns. His most productive season came in 1998 when he had career highs in receiving yards (250), and touchdown catches (seven). Davis’s most notable NFL regular season game came on November 15, 1998. He had three catches for 83 yards and two touchdowns in a 37-3 Packers win over the New York Giants.

In the postseason, Davis had three catches for 34 yards. All seven of his career playoff games were with Green Bay.

Davis played his college football at the University of Virginia. He was with the Cavaliers from 1991 to 1994. In 1992, Davis led the Atlantic Coast Conference in receiving yards per reception (23.8), and in 1994, led the ACC with 10 touchdown catches. At the end of his college career, Davis set the University of Virginia record for most touchdown catches with 28.

In 1995, Davis was the Jets’s fourth round pick, 107th selection overall. He started out as a wide receiver before switching to tight end in 1996.

Davis is one of three former Jets to pass away over the last two weeks. The others were Pro Bowl tackle Marvin Powell, who died at age 67 on September 30, and center Jim Sweeney, who died at age 60 on October 1.
