Former MLB star Alex Rodriguez becomes co-owner of the Minnesota Timberwolves

Former Major League Baseball star Alex Rodriguez of Washington Heights, New York has reached an agreement to be the co-owner of the Minnesota Timberwolves according to Peter Botte of the New York Post. Rodriguez will share the ownership of the Timberwolves with business partner Marc Lore. Rodriguez and Lore are buying the Timberwolves for $1.5 billion from previous Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor with the contingency that Rodriguez and Lore keep the Timberwolves in Minnesota.

The Timberwolves have been one of the worst teams in the NBA since they joined the league in 1989 as an expansion franchise. They have only played 11 postseason games in 30 years, and have a record of 1002 wins and 1544 losses for an awful winning percentage of .394.

In 2020-21, Minnesota has the third-worst record in the Western Conference at 22 wins and 48 losses. They are only better than the Oklahoma City Thunder (21 wins and 49 losses), and the Houston Rockets (16 wins and 54 losses).

Rodriguez, who played 22 seasons of Major League Baseball at either shortstop or third base, is one of six former superstar athletes who have become NBA owners. The other five are former NBA players. Michael Jordan has a stake in the Charlotte Hornets, Dwyane Wade is part owner of the Utah Jazz, Shaquille O’Neal is part owner of the Sacramento Kings, Grant Hill is part owner of the Atlanta Hawks, and David Robinson is part owner of the San Antonio Spurs.

However, Rodriguez’s Major League Baseball career was tainted with controversy. He was suspended for the entire 2014 season for violating Baseball’s performance-enhancing drugs policy.
