Former Jets Pro Bowl wide receiver and tight end Rich Caster passes away at age 75

According to Ryan Gados of FOX News on Monday, former National Football League wide receiver/tight end Rich Caster of Mobile, Alabama passed away on Friday at the age of 75. In his later years, he was suffering from Parkinson’s Disease. Caster played 13 NFL seasons. He was with the New York Jets for eight seasons (1970 to 1977), the Houston Oilers for three seasons (1978 to 1980), the New Orleans Saints for one season (1981), and the Washington Redskins for two seasons (1981 to 1982).

In 161 games, Caster had 322 catches for 5515 receiving yards and 45 touchdown catches. He also had 23 rushes for 119 rushing yards.

Three times with the Jets Caster was selected to the Pro Bowl. He was honoured in 1972, 1974, and 1975. In 1972, Caster had 39 catches for 833 receiving yards and 10 touchdown catches. In 1974, he had 38 catches for 745 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. In 1975, Caster had 47 catches for 820 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Caster’s 10 touchdown catches in 1972 were the second most in the NFL. The only receiver who had more touchdown catches that year was San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Gene Washington of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, who had 12.

Caster was also a Super Bowl champion. He was on the Redskins’s team that won the 1982 Super Bowl. The Redskins defeated the Miami Dolphins 27-17. It should be noted that Caster’s general manager in Washington, Bobby Beathard, died about a year ago at this time of Alzheimer’s Disease at the age of 86.

Caster was the Jets’s second round pick of the 1970 NFL Draft. He played his college football at Jackson State. Rich’s son Max is a professional wrestler.
