Flemington Review: Young Werther Breaks Through

YOUNG Werther despite having only won his debut in a Geelong Maiden finally delivered the second win of his career at Flemington last Saturday.
On an unseasonal good track, the Danny O’Brien trained galloper who has spent his entire career running in Group races bar one race took advantage of contesting a 2000 metres handicap at Flemington in the middle of winter.
It’s a track and distance where he had run second in the 2021 Turnbull Stakes and third in the 2022 Turnbull Stakes.
Look for O’Brien to head for a third tilt at the race.
In terms of the future, the much travelled but lightly raced sprinter Najem Suhail should be the horse to follow. He won the final race with a bit in hand and Robbie Griffiths and Matt De Kock will place him well.
The other highlight of the program was the race to race double by champion jockey Damien Oliver on Cause For Concern and Sunsource. He’s come back from his golfing odyssey in great form.
