Flemington Review: Soulcombe Impresses For 2023 Melbourne Cup
3 years ago - Sportingbase
Did we see next year’s Melbourne Cup winner in Soulcombe after his dazzling victory in the Queen’s Cup (2600 metres)?
The win was reminiscent of Makybe Diva’s win in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 2002, the year before she started her run of three Melbourne Cup victories.
He really was explosive over the last 200 metres.
Chris Waller was very impressed with the victory saying he would give him a light autumn and bring him back for next spring.

“It was a great experience (for the horse) and that’s what it’s all about with horses especially hen you’re coming from a different hemisphere. It is a different style of racing but no better place than Flemington, the bigger tracks, and that will give the horse a lot of confidence,” Waller said.

The main question arising from Champions Day is who the was champion of the Sydney/Melbourne spring carnival?.
Anamoe blotted his copybook in the VRC ChampionsStakes but with four Group 1 wins including the Cox Plate he’s still in front.
Who is second? Either Zaaki or Alligator Blood. Probably Alligator Blood with two Group 1 wins.

Interesting that both Zaaki and Alligator Blood could win when they didn’t have to face off againt each other when both could lead without any problems and control the event.
Also did the English trip knock the edge off Nature Strip who is age starting to take its toll.
He was in the right spot to power away from his rivals, but he couldn’t do it this time.
