FLEMINGTON REIGNS SUPREME

There’s little doubt the Flemington carnival still holds its position as the pre-eminent event in Australian racing after another memorable four days has been completed.

As one pre-eminent Sydney journalist said there’s nowhere else a racing fan should be than at Flemington for Derby Day and Melbourne Cup day.

There were heroes galore. None more so than Mark Zahra with his winning ride on Without a Fight.

He channeled Glen Boss’s three Melbourne Cup-winning rides on Makybe Diva to perfection.

He put the stayer to sleep on the fence and then eased him into the race at the right time.

Joao Moreira copped a lot of criticism for his ride on Soulcombe. He missed the start which is hardly his fault. He then conserved ground and tried to follow Zahra which didn’t work out for him.

The bottom line is that Without A Fight won with ease and would not have been beaten by Soulcombe.

It was a superb training effort from Anthony and Sam Freedman with the former English galloper who they have won four from five races.

The effort of Pride Of Jenni to win back-to-back Group 1 wins was the second-best performance of the week.

What a training effort from Ciaron Maher and David Eustace to prepare her for two front-running wins. Kudos to Declan Bates for his heady rides.

The other notable performance was from Imperatriz. She absorbed the pressure up front which saw some top sprinters wilt and still had enough in reserve to fend off Buenos Noches.

What a performance! What a week of racing!
