Final eight teams determined for 2025 Davis Cup Final

The 2025 Davis Cup will take place in Bologna, Italy from November 18-23 and we now know the eight teams in the finals. They are Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

Team Australia had qualified for the second round but lost 3-2 to Belgium this past weekend in Sydney. The Australians were captained by Lleyton Hewitt, even though he is suspended later this month for pushing a doping official after the semifinals of the 2024 Davis Cup.

In Belgium’s win over Australia, the Belgian star was Raphael Collignon, the 89th ranked player in the world. Collignon upset Alex de Minaur of Sydney, the world number eight, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, and beat Aleksandar Vukic of Sydney, the world number 93, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 in the deciding rubber. Belgium’s other win over the weekend came from Zizou Bergs, who beat Jordan Thompson of Sydney, 7-6, 6-4.

There were upsets throughout the weekend. The Czech Republic upset the United States 3-2 thanks to two singles wins by Jiri Lehecka, and a dominant 6-1, 6-4 win by Jakub Mensik over Frances Tiafoe. Also, the Netherlands, which were the number one seeds in the second round because they reached the 2024 Davis Cup Final, lost to Argentina 3-1. However, the Netherlands win in this tie meant nothing because Argentina had already won the first three matches.

In other action, Austria beat Hungary 3-2. The Hungarians had upset Canada back in February. Meanwhile, Germany beat Austria 4-0, Spain beat Denmark 3-2, and France beat Croatia 3-1. In Spain’s win over Denmark, Pedro Martinez of Spain, beat world number 11 Holger Rune of Denmark 6-1, 4-6, 7-6. Meanwhile, Corentin Moutet had two wins for France.
