Falcons sign defensive tackle Eddie Goldman

According to Josh Schrock of NBC Sports on Wednesday, the Atlanta Falcons have signed defensive tackle Eddie Goldman to a one-year contract. The Falcons will be Goldman’s second National Football League franchise as he previously played six seasons with the Chicago Bears.
In 2021, Goldman started 10 games for the Bears and played 14 games. He had 22 combined tackles (14 solo tackles and eight assisted tackles), one tackle for a loss, one quarterback hit and half a sack.
Goldman played 81 games for the Bears from 2015 to 2021. In six seasons, he had 175 combined tackles (116 solo tackles and 59 assisted tackles), 18 tackles for a loss, 21 quarterback hits, one safety, one pass deflection, two forced fumbles and 13 sacks. Goldman’s safety came in a 15-6 Bears win over the Los Angeles Rams on December 9, 2018.
A native of Washington, District of Columbia, Goldman was the Bears’s second round draft pick, 39th overall, in the 2015 NFL Draft out of Florida State. The Bears’s first round pick in 2015 was wide receiver Kevin White.

In Goldman’s second season with the Bears, he had two separate ankle injuries and could only play six games. The first ankle injury was a high ankle sprain.
Used primarily as a nose tackle in the Bears defense, Goldman opted out of the entire 2020 NFL season because of the coronavirus pandemic. As a result, he was paid a $350,000 stipend according to Michael David Smith of NBC Sports. Goldman was expected to be paid $4.75 million in 2020, and that was transferred over to the following season.
In addition to signing Goldman in the offseason, the Falcons also tried to improve their secondary as well. They came to terms with cornerback Casey Hayward on a two-year deal worth $11 million on March 17. Hayward played last year with the Las Vegas Raiders.
