Evaluating Matt Gay’s historical game kicking field goals
2 years ago - Sportingbase
There were three significant upsets over the weekend in week three play in the National Football League. However, what we saw in Baltimore had historical significance. That is because Indianapolis Colts kicker Matt Gay of Orem, Utah set the NFL record for most field goals in a game 50 yards or more. He accomplished the feat four times in a 22-19 Colts overtime win over the Ravens on Sunday.
All of Gay’s 50+ yard field goals came after the first half. He had a 54-yard field goal with eight minutes and 33 seconds left in the third quarter, to put the Colts up 13-7. Gay then made a 53-yard field goal at 3:38 of the fourth quarter to put Indianapolis up 16-14. He then tied the game with another 53-yard field goal with 57 seconds left in the fourth quarter, and then won it overtime with one minute and nine seconds left in the extra period.
Gay also made a fifth field goal as he successfully kicked a 31 yard field goal with three minutes and 26 seconds left in the first half. The five field goals were equally impressive when you consider the fact that the weather conditions were extremely poor in Maryland on Sunday. That is why it is considered one of the greatest days by a NFL kicker ever.
In an ironic twist, Ravens kicker Justin Tucker missed a 61 yard field goal with six seconds left in the fourth quarter, which would have given Baltimore a 22-19 victory. Tucker has the NFL record for the longest field goal at 66 yards. The native of Houston, Texas made a 66-yard field goal in a 19-17 Baltimore Ravens win over the Detroit Lions on September 26, 2021.
