Europe wins 2023 Ryder Cup

For the 12th time in the history of the tournament, Team Europe won the Ryder Cup. On Sunday, in the premier international team golf competition from Rome, Italy, Europe beat the United States 16.5 to 11.5.

Europe entered Sunday’s singles competition with a comfortable lead of 10.5 to 5.5. In the final day of competition, Europe and the United States won five matches each, with two matches being halved.

Europe got their victories from 2023 FedEx Cup champion Viktor Hovland of Oslo, Norway, four-time major champion Rory McIlroy of Holywood, Northern Ireland, Tyrrell Hatton of High Wycombe, England, Tommy Fleetwood of Southport, England, and Robert MacIntyre of Oban, Scotland. Hovland beat Collin Morikawa 4&3, McIlroy beat Sam Burns 3&1, Hatton beat Brian Harman 3&2, Fleetwood beat Rickie Fowler 3&1, and MacIntytre beat Wyndham Clark 2&1. It was Fleetwood’s victory over Fowler which gave Europe the victory as it put them up 15-11 at the time, and Europe only needed 14.5 points to win the title. McIlroy won his major titles at the 2011 United States Open, 2012 and 2014 PGA Championship and 2014 British Open.

Throughout the entire tournament, Europe was in complete control. They had a dominant 4-0 lead after Friday’s foursome play and never looked back. Hatton and Hovland led Europe with three and a half points overall. Hatton in fact led Europe with a 3-0-1 record.

Europe has now won seven straight Ryder Cup events in Europe. They also won in 1997 in Spain, 2002 in England, 2006 in Ireland, 2010 in Wales, 2014 in Scotland, and in 2018 in France. The last time the United States won in Europe was in 1993 in England.
