Europe wins 2021 Laver Cup

Team Europe are the 2021 Laver Cup champions. On Sunday from TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, the European squad clobbered Team World 14-1.

This was the first Laver Cup since 2019. The event was cancelled in 2020 because players were in Europe preparing for the French Open.

Europe has won the Laver Cup in the past (2017, 2018, 2019), but what we saw this weekend was complete domination. Team World only won one match the entire weekend, and that was a doubles victory by John Isner of the United States and Denis Shapovalov of Canada, as they defeated Matteo Berrettini of Italy, and Alexander Zverev of Germany, 4-6, 7-6, [10-1].

The European side got singles wins from Casper Ruud of Norway, Berrettini, Andrey Rublev of Russia, Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece, Zverev, and Daniil Medvedev of Russia. Rublev teamed up with Tsitsipas and Zverev for two more European doubles wins. The most dominating European singles victory came Medvedev, as he clobbered Shapovalov 6-4, 6-0 on Saturday.

The scoring system for the Laver Cup is unique. Wins on Friday are worth one point, wins on Saturday are worth two points, and wins on Sunday are worth three points. Three singles matches were not played on Sunday because Europe had already won the tournament. Also, matches go to a 10-point tiebreaker if each player wins one set each.

The world’s best mens tennis players will now remain in the United States. This week there will be a ATP 250 event in San Diego, California. That will be followed by the Indian Wells Masters event near Palm Springs, California from October 4-11. The season will then return to Europe in October and November for indoor tournaments.
