According to Reuters Media on Wednesday, 2021 United States Open women’s singles champion Emma Raducanu of Bromley, England will miss two grand slam events over the next couple of months because of two separate injuries. She has recently had surgery on her wrist and ankle, and will be forced to miss the French Open and Wimbledon.

Raducanu lost her last three matches prior to the surgeries. She was beaten 6-3, 6-1 in the fourth round of Indian Wells by the three-time grand slam champion Iga Swiatek of Warsaw, Poland, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 in the first round by 2019 United States Open champion Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada in Miami, and 6-2, 6-1 in the first round by 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko of Riga, Latvia in Stuttgart.

Raducanu was to face Viktoriya Tomova of Bulgaria in the first round of Madrid last week. Due to Raducanu’s withdrawal, Tomova ended up facing Julia Grabher of Austria, and lost 6-1, 7-5.

The Madrid Masters women’s final will take place Saturday. Swiatek is facing 2023 Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka of Minsk, Belarus in a battle of the top two players in the world when it comes to the WTA world rankings. Swiatek is currently first and Sabalenka is currently second.

Head-to-head all-time, Swiatek has the 5-2 advantage. This is the second time this season that Swiatek will have faced Sabalenka. In the Stuttgart final on April 22, Swiatek was victorious 6-3, 6-4. The only other time Swiatek has faced Sabalenka in a WTA final was the 2022 Stuttgart final, which Swiatek won by a score of 6-2, 6-2. Like Madrid, the Stuttgart Open takes place on clay.
