The massive story at Wimbledon at this time is not who is in but who is out. We have already seen eight top 10 seeds eliminated (four men and four women). On the men’s side gone are the third seed Alexander Zverev of Germany, the seventh seed Lorenzo Musetti of Italy, the eighth seed Holger Rune of Denmark, and the ninth seed and 2021 United States Open champion Daniil Medvedev of Russia. On the women’s side gone are the second seed Coco Gauff of the United States, the third seed Jessica Pegula of the United States, the fifth seed Qinwen Zheng of China, and the ninth seed Paula Badosa of Spain. Gauff is a two-time grand slam champion as she won the 2023 United States Open and 2025 French Open.

Zverev was beaten in five sets to Arthur Rinderknech of France, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4. The story of the match was that Zverev had nine break point chances, but could not break Rinderknech once. Musetti lost to Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. Basilashvili had 15 aces, while Musetti only had six. Rune was beaten by Nicolas Jarry of Chile, despite being two sets up. Jarry came through with a 4-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 win. Jarry had 31 aces, compared to only seven for Rune. Meanwhile, Medvedev was beaten 7-6, 3-6, 7-6, 6-2 to Benjamin Bonzi of France. Bonzi had only one double fault, compared to 12 by Medvedev.

Gauff was beaten by 2024 Australian Open semifinalist Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine, 7-6, 6-1. Gauff had nine double faults compared to Yastremska’s three. Pegula lost to Elisabetta Cocciaretto of Italy 6-2, 6-3. Pegula did not have one break point opportunity in the match, while Cocciaretto broke Pegula four times in six chances. Zheng lost 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 to Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic. Zheng was simply clobbered in the final set as Siniakova won 30 of 46 points. Meanwhile, Badosa was beaten by Katie Boulter, the fiancee of Australia’s Alex de Minaur,  6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Boulter broke Badosa five times.
