Dustin Johnson takes over as leader after third round of 2020 PGA Championship

With one round to go, we have a new leader at the 2020 PGA Championship at Harding Park in San Francisco, California. Dustin Johnson of Columbia, South Carolina is at -9, and is looking for his second career major title on Sunday.

However, for Johnson to be triumphant as he was at the 2016 United States Open at Oakmont, he will have to fend off a list of 11 other golfers who are in the hunt. Johnson’s nearest competitors are fellow Americans Scottie Scheffler of Dallas, Texas, and Cameron Champ of Sacramento, California, who are each one back at -8. Scheffler has only made the cut once at a major in his golf career. That happened in 2017 when he was the low amateur at the U.S. Open (tied for 27th). Champ also made the cut at the 2017 U.S. Open (tied for 32nd), and was tied for 54th at the 2019 PGA Championship.

There is a three-way tie at -7. That is where you will find the two-time reigning PGA Championship winner and two-time U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka of West Palm Beach, Florida, Collin Morikawa of Los Angeles, California, and Paul Casey of Cheltenham, England.

Then there is a list of six golfers who are tied for seventh place, and only three strokes back of Johnson. They are a trio of Americans who have not won a major yet (Bryson Dechambeau of Modesto, California, Daniel Berger of Plantation, Florida, and Tony Finau of Salt Lake City, Utah).  The others at -6 are 2015 PGA Championship winner Jason Day of Beaudesert, Australia, 2013 U.S. Open champion Justin Rose of Hook, England, and Tommy Fleetwood of Southport, England.

As for the leader after round two, Haotong Li of China, he had a rough Saturday, as he shot a three-over-par, and went from -8 to -5. In order for Johnson to win the PGA Championship, watch out for the ninth hole on Sunday. It is there where Johnson struggled in round three as he had a double bogey.
