Domantas Sabonis records a unique triple double for Sacramento

The Sacramento Kings defeated the Chicago Bulls 110-101 on Sunday. For Kings center Domntas Sabonis of Portland, Oregon, it was his first triple double since joining Sacramento from the Indiana Pacers in a blockbuster trade at last year’s trade deadline. 

Sabonis had 11 points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists in the nine-point Sacramento win. However, the triple double has historical significance. That is because Sabonis recorded his triple double by attempting only four field goals. That is tied for the least number of field goal attempts by a player recording a triple double in a game in NBA history according to ESPN. Sabonis made two of his four field goal attempts. One of the two field goals Sabonis made was a three-point shot. He also made all six of his free throw attempts.

In Sabonis’s career, he has 19 triple doubles. The first 18 were with the Pacers, as he had none in his rookie season with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2016-17.

For the season, Sabonis is averaging 16.7 points per game, 11 rebounds per game, and 6.5 assists per game. He also has a field goal percentage of .599, three-point percentage of .370, and free throw percentage of .754.

Sabonis’s 241 rebounds this season are the fifth most in the NBA. He only trails Ivica Zubac of the Los Angeles Clippers (287), Clint Capela of the Atlanta Hawks (269), Anthony Davis of the Los Angeles Lakers (256), and Nikola Vucevic of the Chicago Bulls (252).

The Kings are currently in fifth place in the Western Conference. They have a record of 13 wins and nine losses. However, they are only two games back of the first place Phoenix Suns.
