Dolphins running back Raheem Mostert out with a thumb injury

The Miami Dolphins will enter Sunday’s game not only without their top two quarterbacks, but their top running back as well. On Friday it was reported by Josh Alper of NBC Sports that Dolphins running back Raheem Mostert of New Smyrna Beach, Florida would not play on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Wildcard game because a thumb injury.
Mostert suffered the injury this past Sunday in the Dolphins’s 11-6 win over the New York Jets. In the contest Mostert had 81 total yards as he had 11 rushes for 71 yards and two catches for 10 yards. Miami entered the game against the Jets needing a win and a New England loss to make the playoffs. The Dolphins got help from the Bills, as they defeated the New England Patriots 35-23.
Just how rare is an 11-6 score by the way? According to Pro Football Reference, there has only been one other 11-6 final score in NFL history and that came in the 2000 NFC Championship, as the St. Louis Rams beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The game on Sunday was the first ever regular season game with an 11-6 scoreline at the end of 60 minutes.

This was Mostert’s first season in Miami, after playing in San Francisco the six prior seasons. In 2022, he had 181 rushes for 891 yards and three touchdowns, along with 31 catches for 202 yards and two touchdowns.
In Mostert’s absence, Jeff Wilson Jr. of Elkhart, Texas will be the lead back for the Dolphins on Sunday. Like Mostert, Wilson Jr. came to Miami from San Francisco as he was with the 49ers from 2018 to 2022 before traded to the Dolphins on November 1, 2022 for a fifth round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. The season, Wilson Jr. had 176 rushes for 860 yards and five touchdowns, along with 22 catches for 185 yards and another major score. Wilson Jr. became expendable when the 49ers acquired running back Christian McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers on October 20, 2022.
