Diego Schwartzman retires at age 32

According to the ATP Tour website on Thursday, Argentinian tennis player Diego Schwartzman has announced his retirement at the age of 32. Schwartzman’s final match of his career came on Thursday, when he lost in the second round of the Argentina Open to Pedro Martinez of Spain 6-2, 6-2.

Schwartzman is the second high profile tennis player to retire this month. He followed two-time grand slam champion and former world number one Simona Halep of Constanta, Romania, who retired on February 4. Halep’s grand slam titles came at the French Open in 2018 and Wimbledon in 2019.

During his tennis career, Schwartzman won four tennis tournaments on the ATP Tour. He defeated Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria 6-7, 7-6, 6-0 in the final of the 2016 Istanbul Open, Fernando Verdasco of Spain, 6-2, 6-3 in the final of the 2018 Rio Open, Taylor Fritz of the United States, 7-6, 6-3 in the final of the 2019 Los Cabos Open in Mexico, and Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina 6-1, 6-2 in the final of the 2021 Argentina Open.

Schwartzman’s greatest accomplishments came on clay. In addition to winning three tournaments on the surface, he reached the semifinals of the 2020 French Open before losing to Rafael Nadal of Spain, and the finals of the 2020 Italian Open, before losing to Novak Djokovic of Serbia. 

In one of the most humorous men’s doubles partnerships in tennis history, Schwartzman, who is 5’7″, actually teamed up with the 6’10” American John Isner at the 2022 Italian Open. Schwartzman and Isner reached the final before losing to Nikola Metic and Mate Pavic of Croatia. Known for his speed on the court, Schwartzman was ranked as high as eighth in the world in 2020.
