According to tennis.com on Friday, Diego Moyano of Buenos Aires, Argentina has been named the new coach of world number 16 Frances Tiafoe of Hyattsville, Maryland. Moyano, who participated in one grand slam singles match as a player, has previously coached South Africa’s Kevin Anderson from 2020 to his first retirement in 2022, and then American Coco Gauff of Delray Beach, Florida from 2022 to 2023. It should be noted that Moyano was not Gauff’s coach when she won the United States Open, as they split in April of this year.

Tiafoe has parted ways with Wayne Ferreira of Johannesburg, South Africa. Ferreira was coaching Tiafoe from 2020 to 2023. Tiafoe’s other coaches in tennis over the years were Misha Kouznetsov of Russia, Jose Higueras of Diezma, Spain, Nicolas Todero of La Plata, Argentina, 2005 United States Open semifinalist Robbie Ginepri of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Zack Evenden of London, England. Like Ginepri, Ferreira reached the semifinals of a grand slam, as he made the final four in men’s singles at the 1992 and 2003 Australian Open.

While Ferreira coached Tiafoe, the 25-year-old American reached the semifinals of the 2022 United States Open. His most notable wins at Flushing Meadows two years ago came over clay court specialists. In the third round he beat Diego Schwartzman of Argentina, 7-6, 6-4, 6-4, and then in the fourth round he beat Rafael Nadal of Spain, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Then in the quarterfinals, Tiafoe steamrolled past Andrey Rublev of Russia, 7-6, 7-6, 6-4.

Also with Ferreira over the last four years, Tiafoe won two ATP titles. He won the 2023 United States Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston in April (beat Tomas Martin Etchverry of Argentina in the final 7-6, 7-6), and then the 2023 Stuttgart Open (beat Jan-Lennard Stuff of Germany, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6).

Moyano’s grand slam appearance as a player in men’s singles came at the 1999 French Open. There he lost to American Chris Woodruff of 6-2, 6-3, 6-7, 7-5.
