‘Didn’t expect that’: Serve abandons top Aussie Joint in first round shock

Australia’s highest-ranked women’s player has fallen at the first hurdle, with youngster Maya Joint struggling to wrangle her serve in a disappointing home outing for the world No.30 on John Cain Arena on Tuesday.

Joint had been the slanted favourite to win the round one Australian Open meeting with fellow teenager Tereza Valentova, but her serve abandoned her in a still-close-fought 6–4, 6–4. Through the two-set clash, the 19-year-old recorded as many as eight double faults and managed to win just 59% of first-serve points during the Melbourne battle.

Joint did survive a break point at 4–2 in the last, but failed to capitalise on her late momentum and had to watch Valentova — who took a long break after struggling in the Melbourne heat in the second set — head on in week one.

The most damning stat, this Base writer believes, is the five times Joint dropped her service.

All up, she continually opened the door for Valentova and faced a piled-up 17 break points in total.

The 19-year-old’s loss to the Czech starlet is particularly disappointing for Aussie loyalists because the no.30 seed was the first woman in the top 32 at home for any Australian since Ash Barty won the trophy in 2022.

It also felt like Joint played far lower skill-wise than she had throughout 2025. She’s already won two titles on the tour and had busted into the top 100 with an explosive arrival throughout that last calendar campaign. Valentova, meanwhile, had played the quarter-finals of the Aus Open junior girls’ event last year and never been in the AO main draw before.

“Yeah, it feels amazing,” the world No.54 said.

“I didn’t expect that last year at the beginning of the year. I was playing at the ITF, and now I’m here in Melbourne. It feels amazing.”
