Did Coco Gauff deliver the most impressive win of her career?
10 months ago - Sportingbase
Coco Gauff of Atlanta, Georgia has had a spectacular tennis career. She is the world number four and has won the 2023 United States Open. Earlier this year, we talked about Gauff’s greatness in Miami, as she beat fellow American Sofia Kenin 6-0, 6-0 in the second round.
Yes, a double bagel win is basically perfect, especially when it came against Kenin, who is a major champion. Kenin’s major title came at the 2020 Australian Open.
However, what we saw from Gauff on Thursday in the semifinals from Madrid was pure greatness, and possibly the best ever we have ever seen Gauff play. The American star not just beat a great clay court player in Iga Swiatek of Poland, she clobbered her, 6-1, 6-1. Swiatek, has won four of the last five French Opens, and on Thursday, she looked very uncomfortable on the Madrid dirt.
This was the second straight match that Swiatek got off to a bad start in Madrid. In the quarterfinals on Wednesday, Swiatek lost to Australian Open champion Madison Keys of the United States, before winning 0-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Next up for Gauff is Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, the world number one, and three-time grand slam champion. Sabalenka’s grand slam titles came at the 2023 Australian Open, 2024 Australian Open, and 2024 United States Open.
Gauff is currently a +120 underdog. However, she has a very legitimate chance of beating Sabalenka based on her performance against Swiatek. One must remember Gauff has beaten Sabalenka five of nine meetings all-time, including a 7-6, 6-3 win at the 2024 WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
