DeMar DeRozan has a streak for the ages

Over the last six games, Chicago Bulls star power forward DeMar DeRozan of Compton, California is having a streak for the ages. In all Chicago games since February 6, DeRozan has scored a minimum of 35 points and has averaged a minimum of .500 in field goal percentage in each game too. According to ESPN, there is only one other player to accomplish that feat in NBA history over a span of six games. That was the great Wilt Chamberlain, who we rank as the second best player of all-time.

Before I get to the remarkable Chamberlain, let’s take a look at what DeRozan has accomplished over the last 10 days. On February 6, in a 119-108 Bulls loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, De Rozan made 18 of 30 field goal attempts for a field goal percentage of .600, and 45 points. On February 7, in a 127-124 Bulls loss to the Phoenix Suns, DeRozan made 16 of 27 field goal attempts for a field goal percentage of .593, and 38 points. On February 9, in a 121-109 Bulls win over the Charlotte Hornets, DeRozan made 13 of 19 field goal attempts for a field goal percentage of .684, and 36 points. On February 11, in a 134-122 Bulls win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, DeRozan made 14 of 22 field goal attempts for a field goal percentage of .636 and 35 points. On February 12, in a 106-101 Bulls win over the Oklahoma City Thunder, DeRozan made 12 of 24 field goal attempts for a field goal percentage of .500, and 38 points. Then on February 14, in a 120-109 win over the San Antonio Spurs, DeRozan made 16 of 24 field goal attempts for a field goal percentage of .667 and 40 points.

Chamberlain accomplished the feat not once, but twice. The first time was with the Philadelphia Warriors in six straight games from December 30, 1960 to January 12, 1961. The second time was also with the Warriors in six straight games from March 6, 1963 to March 15, 1963. The most significant game in this streak happened on March 10, 1963 in a 163-148 Philadelphia Warriors loss to the Syracuse Nationals. Chamberlain scored 70 points, the fourth most points a player has ever scored in one game in a loss. Amazingly, Chamberlain’s name is number one, three and four on that list.

DeRozan meanwhile is averaging 27.9 points per game, and has a field goal percentage of .514 in 54 regular season games. More importantly the Bulls are tied with the Miami Heat fort the best record in the Eastern Conference at 37 wins and 21 losses.
