Day 12 Olympic Recap: Aussie Gold in sailing

Team Australia has won its second gold medal in sailing at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021. At the Enoshima Yacht Harbor on Wednesday, Mathew Belcher of Gold Coast Queensland and William Ryan of Lake Macquarie placed first in the men’s 470 competition.

In the men’s two-person dinghy 470 race, Belcher and Ryan combined for 31 total points and 23 net points. Sweden’s Anton Dahlberg and Fredrik Bergstrom won the silver medal, and Spain’s Jordi Xammar and Nicolas Rodriguez Garcia-Paz won the bronze medal. Australia’s other sailing gold medal came from Matthew Wearn in the men’s laser competition this past Sunday.

This was the third straight Olympic medal for Belcher in the men’s laser. He previously won the gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London with Malcolm Page of Sydney, and then won the silver medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro with Ryan.

Team Australia came away with two more bronze medals on Wednesday. In the men’s team pursuit track cycling, Australia beat New Zealand to take third place. The Kiwis had an unfortunate accident during the competition, which allowed Australia to be victorious. In the gold medal race, Italy set a world record of 3:42.032 in beating Denmark.

Meanwhile, in the women’s 10 kilometre swim, Kareena Lee of Noosa placed third with a time of one hour, 59 minutes, 32.5 seconds. She reached the podium by 2.3 seconds over Anna Olasz of Hungary. Ana Marcela Cunha of Brazil won the gold medal and Sharon van Rouwendaal of the Netherlands won silver.

Australia currently is in sixth place when it comes to total medals at the 2020 Olympic Games. With 36 medals, they have won 15 gold medals, four silver medals and 17 bronze medals. Team Australia has already won seven more medals than the 29 medals they won at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
