In the second of two quarterfinals in women’s field hockey, Australia will take on India. The Aussies won Group B with a perfect record of five wins and zero losses. In the process, they outscored their opponents 13-1. In the five games, they defeated Spain 3-1, China 6-0, Japan 1-0, New Zealand 1-0, and Argentina 2-0. Australian goalkeeper Rachael Lynch of Warrandyte has recorded a shutout in each of her last four games. The Australian leading scorer has been Emily Chalker of Crookwell, who has five goals.

India enters the quarterfinals with a record of two wins and three losses after finishing fourth in Pool A. The other three quarterfinals have Germany versus Argentina (10:30 a.m.), the Netherlands versus New Zealand (7:30 p.m.), and Spain versus Great Britain (10 p.m.)

The Matildas will be looking for a better result against Sweden in the semifinals, than their Group G contest where they lost to 4-2. This high-action, emotional contest saw Australia score twice in the 30 minutes of extra time, and record the win despite a hat trick from British star Ellen White. After four games so far, the Australian leader has been without a doubt Samantha Kerr of East Fremantle, who has five goals. The other semifinal has Canada versus the United States (6 p.m.).

Despite losing their first two games of the Olympic women’s basketball tournament (85-70 to Belgium, and 76-74 to China), the Aussie women still have a legitimate chance of qualifying for the quarterfinals. Their task is to pound Puerto Rico, who have lost by a combined total of 77 points so far.
