Danielle Collins and Jannik Sinner win 2024 Miami Open

The 2024 Miami Open completed on Sunday, and we have a surprise champion and an expected champion. First let us take a look at the surprise winner, as the winner was Danielle Collins of St. Petersburg, Florida. Collins, who announced her plans to retire at the end of 2024 earlier this year, defeated the fourth seed and 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, 7-5, 6-3 in Saturday’s final. Meanwhile, Italy’s Jannik Sinner, now the number two ranked men’s tennis player in the world, and 2024 Australian Open champion, defeated Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, the 11th seed, 6-3, 6-1.
In the women’s final, the difference was the fact that Rybakina only capitalized once on 11 break point opportunities. She had her chances but simply could not deliver.
Even though Collins has been to an Australian Open final in the past, her win in Miami was noteworthy as it came in her home state. She beat four other seeded players en route to the final. They were the 30th seed Anastasia Potapova of Russia, 6-2, 6-2 in round two, the 19th seed Sorana Cirstea of Romania, 6-3, 6-2 in round four, the 23rd seed and 2022 United States Open semifinalist Caroline Garcia of France, 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals, and the 14th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia, 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals.
In the men’s final, Sinner completely steamrolled past Dimitrov. The Bulgarian needed to be praised for having numerous long rallies against Sinner, but in the end it was the 22 year old Italian who passed Carlos Alcaraz of Spain in the ATP rankings. From a statistical perspective, Dimitrov only had one break point opportunity the entire match, and did not capitalize. Sinner had eight chances, and broke Dimitrov four times. Dimitrov’s most notable win in the event came in the quarterfinals as he upset Alcaraz 6-2, 6-4.
Sinner’s other statement win in Miami meanwhile came in the semifinal, as he spanked the number three seed, and 2021 United States Open champion Daniil Medvedev of Russia, 6-1, 6-2. Sinner had seven aces and broke Medvedev four times.
