Cubs sign third baseman Alex Bregman to a massive deal

The Chicago Cubs have signed third baseman Alex Bregman of Albuquerque, New Mexico to a significant contract. The terms are five years and $175 million according to Jordan Bastian of mlb.com.
Bregman is joining his third Major League Baseball team. He was with the Houston Astros from 2016 to 2024, and one season with the Boston Red Sox in 2025.
In Bregman’s career, he was a three-time All-Star. He was honoured in the American League by the Astros in 2018 and 2019, and the Red Sox in 2025. While with the Astros, Bregman won two World Series in 2017 and 2022. He also won the Silver Slugger Award with the Astros in 2019.
In Bregman’s career, he led Major League Baseball in a key statistical category. He had a MLB-high 51 doubles in 2015, a MLB-high 119 walks in 2019 and MLB-high 10 sacrifice flies in 2022.

This past season with the Red Sox, Bregman batted .273 with 18 home runs and 62 runs batted in. During 114 games, 433 at bats, and 495 plate appearances, he scored 64 runs and had 118 hits, 28 doubles, one stolen base, 51 walks, 200 total bases, two sacrifice flies, an on base percentage of .360 and a slugging percentage of .462.
Bregman had two memorable games for the Red Sox this season. On April 6, Bregman had four hits (two doubles, one home run, one single), and six runs batted in during an 18-7 Red Sox win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Then on April 15, Bregman had five hits (one double, two singles and two home runs) in a 7-4 Red Sox win over the Tampa Bay Rays.
In the offseason, Bregman was one of three major free agents that were on the market. The other two (Kyle Tucker and Bo Bichette) are still available.
This is the second key transaction the Cubs have made in a week. Last week, they acquired starting pitcher Edward Cabrera in a trade with the Miami Marlins.
