Cowboys Pro Bowl guard Zack Martin retires at age 34

According to Madison Williams of Sports Illustrated on Thursday, Dallas Cowboys guard Zack Martin of Indianapolis, Indiana has retired at the age of 34. The news of Martin’s retirement is no surprise because there had been some speculation of this announcement for a while. Martin had season ending ankle surgery in December after he injured his ankle in a game against the Houston Texans on November 18. At the time there was a belief Martin might have played his final game.

Martin ws the Cowboys’s first round pick, 16th overall, in the 2014 National Football League Draft. He played his college football at Notre Dame.

During his career, Martin was selected to the Pro Bowl nine times in 11 seasons with Dallas. He was honoured in his first six NFL seasons from 2014 to 2019, and again for three straight years from 2021 to 2023. Also during Martin’s career, he was a first team All-Pro Guard seven times (2014, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023), and a second team All-Pro Guard twice (2015 and 2017).

Martin came close to winning one NFL award. He was the runner up for the 2014 Offensive Rookie of the Year, but lost to New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. of New Orleans, Louisiana.

In all, Martin played 162 regular season games. He had three fumble recoveries. They came in a 33-27 Cowboys loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on November 8, 2015, in a 30-16 Cowboys win over the Green Bay Packers on October 16, 2016, and in a 20-17 Cowboys win over the Los Angeles Chargers on September 19, 2021.

Martin played in six NFL playoff games. He is the brother of former NFL center Nick Martin.
